New York Young Men Sing is an annual event hosted by the Cornell University Glee Club, the men’s choir at Cornell. Knowing that it can sometimes be difficult to be a male singer in high school, we host this event to encourage male students to continue singing not only through high school, but throughout their collegiate and adult lives. The students will arrive at Cornell University in the morning and spend the beginning of the day rehearsing with the Glee Club. After lunch, the students will be taught a song by The Hangovers, the a cappella subset of the Glee Club and then rehearse more with the full Glee Club. The afternoon will culminate with a concert in Sage Chapel showcasing the repertoire learned that day. Registration costs $30 per student, but we are also offering a flat rate of $100 per school to send an unlimited number of students. If there are financial concerns, please contact us as scholarships are available.
This year's guest clinician is James Burton, choral director of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and Boston Symphony Orchestra.
James Burton was appointed Conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, and to the new position of BSO Choral Director, in February 2017. Born in London, Mr. Burton began his training at the Choir of Westminster Abbey, where he became head chorister. He was a choral scholar at St. John's College, Cambridge, and holds a master's degree in orchestral conducting from the Peabody Conservatory, where he studied with Frederik Prausnitz and Gustav Meier. He has conducted concerts with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Hallé, the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, Royal Northern Sinfonia, BBC Concert Orchestra, and Manchester Camerata; in early 2016 he made his debut with the Orquestra Sinfònica Nacional with concerts in the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City… His compositions and arrangements have been performed internationally, and his orchestral arrangements for Arlo Guthrie have been performed by the Boston Pops, by many other leading U.S. orchestras, and at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall.
