Sao Paulo

State University of Sao Paulo
The Glee Club began its tour with a joint concert at the State University of Sao Paulo with CORALUSP, which has been recognized five times as the best chorale in the state of Sao Paulo by the Sao Paulo Association of Art Critics.  CORALUSP is currently under the direction of Benito Juarez, one of Brazil's most acclaimed conductors.  Our performance there was part of a festival celebrating the 450th anniversary of the city.  Sao Paulo is the financial capital of South America, with 20 million inhabitants, including hundreds of Cornell alumni and a tremendous population of U.S. citizens.

Jundiai ~ Campinas

Vila Arens Cathedral ~ State University of Campinas
We performed at the historic Vila Arens Cathedral, in beautiful Jundiai, a city home to nearly 300,000 Brazilians.  We traveled a short distance north for a mid-day concert at the State University of Campinas, one of Brazil's largest universities, with twenty colleges.  We were happy to join the choir of the UNICAMP Arts Institute for a lunchtime concert, as is customary in the popular tourist city Campinas.

March 23 - 27

Cabo Frio ~ Rio de Janeiro

Municipal Theater ~ School of Music
After a long busride, we arrived at the popular vacation destination of Cabo Frio.  Home to some of the world's most amazing beaches, this coastal city is home to Coral Cantavento, conducted by Ruy Capdeville, who is well known throughout the surrounding states of Rio and Minas Gerais, and in the capital, Brasilia.  There, on the 24th of March, we performed for students of two local elementary schools who are eager to share in the American musical experience.  The following day, Cornell and Coral Cantavento performed together in the center of the city at their Municipal Theatre.  Our final performance in Brazil was in Rio de Janeiro.  We performed Brahms's Alto Rhapsodie with the Orquestra Sinfonica da Escola de Musica da UFRJ, along with several of our own pieces, and had the opportunity to listen to OSEM play a small segment of their own repetoire.  We were especially honored to perform the world premier of Missa Brevis III, in the presence of its composer, Ernani Aguiar.

Return to Ithaca

WhatSage Chapel
Finally, a bit tired from eleven days of practicing and building friendships on the other side of the globe, (most of) the men of the Glee Club boarded a plane in Rio and head back to Ithaca.  After resting up, we performed our return from tour concert in Sage Chapel on April 8th.
